Sarah started riding at an early age. She first started showing in the Hunter division at the age of 10, the dressage division at age 12 and her first Jr. jumper class at age 13. She finished her Junior years having shown horses both in H/Js and dressage throughout the US and Canada. In dressage, she had trained and shown 2 horses through the fourth level and one through Prix St. George. These horses were shown over fences at the same time.
After graduating from Albion College with a Business degree, Sarah went to work full time but pursued her dressage education on the side. She took an interest in judging and went through judges training achieving her USEF "r" in 1977. At the same time she had done well enough in competition to be included in the USET Developing Rider Clinics with USET Coach Bengt Lundquist then later with USET Coach Melle Van Bruggan. With the help of these 2 coaches, she was able to train her first horse up to Grand Prix. Sarah was also continuing her judging education and earned her USEF "S" (Senior) rating in 1985. In 1988, Sarah started training full time.
Since college, Sarah has personally trained 7 horses from Training through FEI levels. She has helped many riders achieve this as well. She has had students that have won Regional Championships and Horse of the Year Awards. She has also helped riders earn their Bronze, Silver and Gold Rider's Medals. She has given riding clinics from Florida to Fairbanks, Alaska, and has judged from coast to
coast. She works with juniors, adult amateurs and trainers alike. She is currently continuing her riding education by working with Jochen Hippenstiel of Tempel Farms, Tom Dvorik who was on the PanAm team for Canada, Linda Zang (USA's Olympic level judge) and Stephen Clarke (the Olympic judge for Great Britain) with her FEI horse, Rainier.
Sarah is available at Wind Song Equestrian Center on weekdays. She can be reached at (248) 646-5258.
